Tread Lightly

Trail etiquette and how to protect the places we ride so they stay open.

Every trail we love stays open because riders take care of it. A few simple habits keep Moab wild and keep the gates open for the next group.

Stay on the trail

  • Drive only on marked routes and slickrock. Don't widen the trail or make new bypasses.
  • Avoid the dark, bumpy crust on the soil. It's biological soil crust, a living ground cover that holds the desert together. One tire track can take decades to heal.
  • Respect closures and private property, and leave gates the way you found them.

Share the trail

  • The vehicle going uphill generally has the right of way. Find a safe spot to pull over.
  • Slow down around hikers, bikers and horses.
  • Keep groups together and let faster groups pass.

Leave no trace

  • Pack out everything you bring in, including food scraps.
  • Follow current fire restrictions, and use existing fire rings or a fire pan.
  • Camp only in designated or already-used sites.
  • Wash your rig after the trip so you don't carry weed seeds to the next place you ride.

Rig Life Partner Tip

Grab trash bags, a shovel and a fire pan before you head out, and rinse the red dirt off your rig when you get back so you don't spread weed seeds to the next trail.
